Our problem as humans is not that we are inadequate, wrong, or broken. Our problem is that we believe we are. This fundamental misconception underlies every other problem, dysfunction, and pain that we have. – from The Energy Codes by Sue Morter
For those of us who have recognized how internal dialogue is constantly running a story of how well or poorly we are doing in the game of life there comes the understanding that there can be a vast difference between reality and the conclusions of the inner commentator. And even though we may be astute when it comes to distinguishing opinions from truth when others express themselves, we may not be nearly as perceptive in separating truth from misperception when our mind chatter voices its thoughts and feelings. Therefore, the challenge and the hope of awakened living, is to separate the “wheat from the chaff.” To recognize the truth of us amidst all the misperceptions that have become lodged in our minds from the conditioning of our past is the way we bring suffering to an end.
Our mortal minds dwell upon false impressions that tell us we are inadequate, broken or something is missing in us. From this perspective of lack and limitation, we are on constant lookout for compensatory solutions to mend the rift in our sense of wellbeing. And despite the level of commitment and effort we bring to address these seeming shortcomings there is no end to this crusade and like a whack-a-mole game as soon as we knock down one problem, a new one pops up to taunt us.
If we’ve been at this exasperating game for a while, we may see that the answer is not a matter of extinguishing the false beliefs directly since they stem from an erroneous sense of self that sees itself as separate, alone, and flawed. That sense of inadequacy can only generate thoughts and feelings consistent with its not-enoughness, so any effort to reform its output is therefore futile. As the expression goes, you can teach a cat to bark but despite your efforts it will respond according to its nature and simply “meow.” Similarly, we can’t reason with or defeat this character with its conditioned negativity never mind how sincere or robust our efforts may be. In fact, the more effort we expend in trying to change its attitude the more real we make it and ensure that it will live on to validate its purpose and perpetuate its agenda. You see, its not real, no matter how real it may seem.
Only what God made is real. And God made nothing, save what is whole, perfect, and loving. Like the real you. And the truth of you knows nothing of lack, limitation, or brokenness. As A Course in Miracles reminds us The Self That God created needs nothing. It is forever complete, safe, loved, and loving. We’ve thought otherwise and suffered. We listen to the voice of our surface mind with its endless wants and needs instead of the heart that remains connected to the Truth of us. As every spiritual master has realized and taught, and expressed succinctly by the Little Prince, It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.
The vicissitudes of thought can bounce us around and perpetuate endless wanting and never-ending dissatisfaction. The Heart on the other hand, sits in quiet knowing of its true home, its divine essence, immersed in a sense of wellbeing and a peace that cannot be disturbed or delayed. The heart of us needs no revision or correction or self-improvement. And it is calling us back to reside in its field of knowing and listen to its soothing refrain. Even a moment in its presence will liberate you from your struggle and remind you that this is where you truly live, and have your being.
Remembering with you,
Larry
